Angels & Airwaves – “We Are on the Horizon of a New Chapter”

Tom DeLonge’s spaced out post-Blink 182 project Angels & Airwaves has released an update regarding their next major project, a multi-format venture involving a character named POET – a “vigilante who invades your dreams and fights your nightmares.”

In the post on their official site, the band states that POET will be a “brand” that covers a broad range of entertainment formats, and will be released exclusively through DeLonge’s recently launched production platform “To The Stars Inc“. A new album from the band will also accompany the project but will not be titled POET and will instead be released as a separate extension of the POET story, only being influenced by its themes of “dreams, nightmares, love, loss and hope” through the interpretations of the band members and the music.

Angels & Airwaves (abbreviated as AVA) has had nothing but ambitious intent since the project’s inception in 2005, ambition that reached new heights when the band independently released the LOVE epic in 2011, which spanned 2 separate albums and a feature length motion picture. However, it doesn’t seem that POET will be released in the same method, as the band states that it will encompass various forms of media, including “characters, storylines, art, animation, books and toys”.

The POET character has been around since the bands 2006 debut album, appearing in artwork and acting as a "mascot" of sorts. This image taken from guitarist David Kennedy's Instagram profile shows off his new look for the upcoming project.

The update also made mention of an all new AVA website preparing to launch in the summer that will feature varying degrees of paid memberships for exclusive content, including a members only ticket purchasing system for shows. Fans will be able to pay a low base price for a membership, and then will be able to pay extra to upgrade depending on what content they wish to unlock. An interesting plan, but not one unfamiliar to AVA, as they’ve had a similar system in place since DeLonge launched the social media platform “Modlife” in 2007, which has since been used by many different artists including The White Stripes, Korn and Pearl Jam.

This update comes after many hints and teases relating to the POET project, as posted by members of the band since last year through social networking, including images of POET characters, concept art and song clips. It is still unstated as to when this will all be released but the album is set for a release “near Halloween“. Stick with Rock Industry for more as it comes!
