The Southampton trio are back with their new album, Sweet Sour. This is the band’s latest release following their Friends EP back in 2010, and so Sweet Sour has been greatly anticipated. Was it worth the wait?

A simple yet powerful drum beat from Matt Howard kicks the album off, helped along by Emma Richardson’s weighty bass line. The twin vocals from Emma and Russell Marsden in this title track are flawless in their timings which is a great contrast to the instruments raw, hard hitting, wall of sound.
The next two tracks, Bruises and Lay My Head Down calm things down with Emma’s vocals becoming the stand out element. The tempo is picked up again with The Devil Takes Care Of His Own, which I’m sure will become a huge anthem for the band. The song starts with a heavy guitar riff that creates anticipation for the track to kick into its thunderous chorus which doesn’t disappoint. The rest of the album skips from chilled out songs like Navigate and Hometown, to tracks that will make you want to get up and party, such as You’re Not Pretty But You Got It Going On.

Over all I am a fan of the album and I think it will make a lot of people wish it was festival session already. After a long, festival night partying, chilling out under the sun and watching Band of Skulls will be a great way to recover and build your self up for the next night. However, I don’t feel the album flows as well as it could have and I fear most people will just stick it into their shuffle play lists rather than listen to it as a whole.
